A small path into a new script
Learn Akshara is built around a simple idea: reading begins with one recognisable sound at a time. At LearnAkshara.com, small lessons connect letter shapes with the sounds they make.
Learn Akshara is designed for children, families, heritage learners, and adult beginners. The current course focuses on Malayalam. The wider name leaves room for other writing systems in the future, but we are starting by making one course useful and enjoyable.
How the Malayalam course works
The course introduces vowels, consonants, combined sounds, and first words in stages. Each learning card keeps the Malayalam form visually prominent, adds an English transliteration as a pronunciation guide, and lets the learner hear the sound.
- Guided lessons introduce a manageable group of letters at a time.
- Matching connects Malayalam shapes with English spellings of their sounds.
- Mixing shows how consonants and vowel signs form new syllables.
- Sound hunt and flashcards strengthen listening and recall.
- Short quizzes reinforce each stage, and every level remains freely available.
Sound that travels with the lesson
Pronunciation uses bundled Malayalam recordings, so each letter, syllable, joined form, and word plays the same sound on every supported device. The foundational vowel and consonant clips are adapted from the University of Texas at Austin's Malayalam pronunciation course by Donald R. Davis, Jr. and Darsana Manayathu Sasi under the CC BY 4.0 license. Learn Akshara trimmed the row recordings into individual clips, normalized their volume, converted them to mono, and encoded them as MP3. The spoken content was not altered. Learn Akshara does not need microphone access.
Machine pronunciation and English transliteration are learning aids, not substitutes for the regional nuance and feedback a fluent Malayalam speaker can provide.
Private by design
No account is required. Lesson progress, quiz scores, and the sound setting are saved in the learner's own browser so a session can continue later. Learn Akshara does not currently include advertising or analytics.
