How Bengali letters work
Independent vowels have their own letters. Attached vowel signs combine with consonants: compare ক with কা (ka). Read the whole form, including marks above, below, or beside it.
This beginner set covers 11 vowels and 35 consonants from the course. It is not a complete inventory of every written form.

The k family
Traditional order: plain, aspirated, voiced, voiced aspirated, nasal. Aspirated means released with extra breath.

Keep the five traditional positions. ঞ shares the modern n sound with ন; this row is a spelling family.

The traditional retroflex row. ṭ and ḍ mark sounds made behind the teeth; modern ণ shares the n sound.

The dental family
For the stops, touch the tongue near the upper teeth. th and dh mean aspiration, not English th.

Flowing sounds and dotted letters
Compare য with য় and the dotted flaps with ordinary র. Dotted spellings are separate written targets.

The sh spellings and h
শ, ষ and স commonly share sh. The parenthesized letter identifies the written answer, not a new sound.
